A first-timer's 3-day Goa itinerary

Three days is enough to see North Goa properly if you stop trying to see all of Goa. Here is a route that does not have you in a car all weekend.

The most common first-trip mistake is trying to fit both coasts into a long weekend. You end up seeing the inside of a car. Three days is a North Goa trip — base yourself once, keep the driving short, and leave the south for a longer visit.

Day 1 — land, and go no further than the beach

Arrange the airport pickup in advance so the first hour is not spent negotiating. Check in around Baga or Calangute, walk to the sand, and let the first evening be a shack dinner and an early night. The temptation to start immediately is strong and worth resisting — the pace of the next two days depends on it.

Day 2 — water in the morning, market in the evening

The sea is calmest early, which is when the water sports operators want you anyway. Do one thing properly rather than three things in a rush — parasailing and a jet ski slot is a full, satisfying morning. Spend the afternoon horizontal, then head to a market when it cools down.

Parasailing at CalanguteShort, and the one most people remember.
  1. Get to the beach early — the water is flattest and the queues are shortest
  2. Leave the middle of the day free; the sun does the deciding
  3. Anjuna's market is an evening, not a stop
  4. Book the following morning's tour before you go to bed, not at breakfast

Day 3 — one tour, then the river

A guided North Goa day covers the forts and the viewpoints without you working out parking at each one. Finish on the Mandovi — a sunset cruise is a low-effort way to end a short trip, and it gets you back in time for a proper dinner.

The best time to visit Goa, season by season

Goa has three quite different seasons and only one of them is on the postcards. What each one is actually like, and who it suits.
